Can Titanium Rings Be Cut Off? – Titanium Ring Myths #1

August 31st, 2009

Can titanium rings be cut off? Absolutely! Titanium rings, just like almost any other metal can be cut off with standard metal cutting tools. While titanium is much stronger than metal per unit of weight, titanium rings are a lot lighter than metal rings. As a result cutting through a titanium ring is just as easy as cutting through any metal ring. We called our local ER and they said they can remove any ring-gold, platinum or titanium-easily.

We have heard from people shopping at traditional jewelry stores that they were told titanium rings could not be cut off. We surmise that they tell shoppers this to frighten them into the more expensive gold rings. Most jewelers don’t have the skills and equipment to work with titanium rings.

So, if you are worried about the ability to cut off a titanium ring in an emergency, don’t!

Like with any ring, removing a titanium ring from a slightly enlarged finger is best accomplished with the old stand-bye:

  1. Soak finger in ice-cold water for five minutes to reduce any swelling. Your finger actually swells during the day, so use cold water to get your finger to the smallest size possible.
  2. Apply lubricant to ring. Olive oil, hand lotion and liquid dish washing detergent work well.
  3. Slowly twist the ring as you pull it off.
