Why titanium?

Titanium is a relatively new material for jewelry. It was only in the mid-1990s that the techniques to work with titanium for rings was developed. Since then the use of titanium for rings has increased several-fold. There are some very good reasons for this.

For those who skin allergies, titanium is a perfect choice. Titanium is hypoallergenic, which means that it is basically non-reactive with human tissue. As such, it has become a popular metal to use for hip replacements. Titanium rings, for example, will not discolor skin (like a lot of cheaper metals) and will not induce swelling or any skin reactions.

Another advantage of using titanium for rings is that it is incredibly strong. This makes titanium rings more impervious to the dents and dings in the ring you might encounter with a softer metal like gold. There was even a rumor many years ago that titanium rings are so strong that medical personnel could not remove them in case of an injury. While we agree that titanium rings are incredibly strong, we know from personal experience that the cutting tools in any ER are more than powerful enough to remove a titanium or any other kind of ring.

One thing that everyone notices when they receive their titanium ring is that titanium is very light. They are close to 1/4 the weight of a similar sized platinum ring and less than half that of gold. The combination of strength and lightness make for a near-perfect ring.

A few other titanium tidbits:
* It’s non-corrosive. Sea water and many acids will not affect or discolor titanium.
* It’s non-magnetic.
* It’s used widely for aircraft, submarines, sports equipment, architecture and implants.
* It was discovered in 1791 and has the atomic number 22.

Titanium Ring Inlay Material: African Blackwood

African Blackwood is one of the woods we use extensively in our titanium rings. Blackwood comes from the African subcontinent and flourishes in the the areas in southern Africa that are seasonally dry. It’s appearance is more like a bush than a large tree.

Blackwood makes an excellent inlay material for titanium rings due to its density and color. Blackwood is so dense, in fact, it will not float.The pure black colors and density make it an extremely durable wood and when set into a titanium ring band, the Blackwood and the natural luster of titanium make for an stunning combination.

African Blackwood has had several uses throughout the ages. It has beautiful tonal qualities, which makes it a common wood used in woodwindwind instruments. It has been used in pipe instruments, clarinets and oboes. Many tribal communities in African has utilized Blackwood for carving. Blackwood has also been used for furniture, though it’s relatively narrow widths limit its use.

The Titanium Ring Shop uses Blackwood in several of its rings. From our a simple titanium band with a Blackwood inlay to a ring with Blackwood and Rose Gold inlays and one with Blackwood, Rose Gold and Koa Wood.

Koa is one of the most important woods in Hawaii. Endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, Koa wood has historically been used for a wide range of uses, including bowls, spears, paddles and canoes. The wood is now commonly used for furniture, cabinetry, bowls, sculptures, musical instruments and jewelry.
Koa wood inlays rings are some of our most popular rings at the Titanium Ring Shop.

Grown at fairly high elevations—300’ to 7,500’—Koa wood grows well on all the Hawaiian Islands. The best conditions exist, however, in the deep volcanic soils on the “newer” islands—Maui and Hawaii Island (the Big Island). All of the Koa wood used by the Titanium Ring Shop is sustainably harvested.

Koa wood ranges from light brown to a deep browns. Each wood is unique, so the Titanium Ring Shop artisans take great care in selecting the finest Koa wood available and using techniques that have been developed in over 15 years of working with wood inlays.
